Daylight Saving Time has been adopted in many countries where there are seasonal changes in daylight hours, when the clocks are changed for the summer, usually by one hour. (A mnemonic is 'spring forward, fall back.')
It originated in the UK during WWI, when it was considered necessary to maximise production.
