The Free City of Danzig is an independent state established by Napoléon I in 1807. It consists of the city of Danzig and some of its surrounding countryside.
Originally a mostly German city the country got an increasingly Polish character after the Duchy of Warsaw annexed most of Prussia after The Second Great War, though German remained one of the two official languages of the state until 1982 after which the languages was dropped altogether by the government.
Danzig remains an important port city and has managed to accumulate vast wealth as one of the financial centres of Eastern Europe.
