Following the dissolution of the Austrian Empire, the two states of Slovakia and the Czech Republic became an independent nation as the Republic of Czechoslovakia. However they were forcibly annexed by the Germans during the Second World War. During the later part of World War II, the nation was liberated by eastern European forces, mainly from Poland and the Soviet Union. In 1948, the nation joined the Warsaw Pact. It remains a member, albeit an uneasy one.
