Cyprus always has had a history filled with ethnic wars and turmoil. So, when Akrotiri and Thekelia lost contact with England, the British personnel put their bases under martial law, and even decided it would be best to seize the island so as "to make sure heathen anarchy does not befall one of the last vestiges of the British Empire". They planned on exploiting the fighting between the natives Greeks and non-native Turks.
