The Cygnian Imperial Armed Forces are the armed forces of Cygnia. They consist of the Imperial Army, Imperial Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force. The Emperor of the Cygnians is the official Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces; the powers normally associated with such a position are however delegated through Imperial Prerogative to the Chancellor of Cygnia. The Chancellor helps form military policy with the Imperial Secretariat for Defence (ISD), a federal executive department, acting as the principal organ by which military policy is carried out.
From the time of its inception, the military played a decisive role in the history of Cygnia. A sense of national unity and identity was forged as a result of victory in the Cygnian War of Independence and two centuries later in the Great War.
The National Security Act of 1947, adopted following World War III and during the Cold War's onset, created the modern Cygnian military framework; the Act merged the previously Cabinet-level Imperial Secretariats for War and for the Navy into the Imperial Secretariat for Defence; the Department for the Air Force was added as a junior department of the Secretariat for Defence. The National Security Council was also created by the act.
The Cygnian military draws its personnel from a large pool of paid volunteers; although conscription has been used in the past in various times of both war and peace, it has not been used since 1972, when the National Service program was suspended. As of 2016, Cygnia spends about § 73.5 billion annually to fund its military forces. The Cygnian military has significant capabilities in both defence and regional power projection due to its large budget, resulting in advanced and powerful equipment.
