In the years following the Republican Revolution, many groups spontaneously sprung up to try and fill the void left by the partial disappearance of traditional religions.
[edit] Commonalities
Although having varying philosophies, most of these groups, known collectively as Cults of Reason, do share some similitudes:
- a humanist philosophy.
- A stated aversion to "superstitions"
- an atheistic, agnostic or impersonal aproach to deity. When one is present, he is usually refered to as "The Supreme Being", an impersonal and unknowable Demiurge.
- a recycling of Catholic and/or ancient pagan rituals and imagery. It should be noted however that ritual that are incorporated are usually done with a spirit of social binding or psychodrama, not a search for miraculous events.
