Cuba is an island country in the Caribbean. The nation consists of the island of Cuba, the Isla de la Juventud, and several archipelagos. The largest city and capital is Havana, and Cuba borders the United States by sea.
Cuba declared its independence from Spain alongside other South American countries during the 1810s. It profited because of its sugarcane crops, but it was hit severely by the Great Depression. During this time, civil war broke out between Fascists and Republicans, and later, the communist faction entered. The Republicans won out in 1963, though Cuba is still plagued by terrorist attacks. It has never fully recovered, and is now one of poorest countries in the Caribbean.
