Cuba was arguably the only nation that the US never expected to join the Union. When Castro was overthrown in 2007, the first act of the temporary regime was to request that they too be permitted to join the Union. Cuba is one of the newly admitted states that is a chief consumer of the State Development Fund, created as a provision of the State Reorganization Act to aide in the socioeconomic development of some of the new states that were economically, or socially behind the rest of the country. Currently Havana is receiving the most amount of aid to develop schools, hospitals, roads, bridges, sewer systems, etc.

Transition to Statehood

Cuba was originally the only North American Nation whose government was not in favor of joining the Union as its economy was made non-existent in the shadow of the US Asteroid infused economic superpower. When Castro announced that Cuba would, "Stand strong as our fellow Latin nations succumb to the fears of the Gringo Empire that has moved from a silent threat, to an tyrannical expansionist empire!" Castro was overthrown almost immediately after the speech by a mob of Cuban civilians. Led by escaped political prisoner Jose Daniel Ferrer Garcia, the Revolutionaries voted to join the US.

Current Status

Cuba is presently the Caribbean's second wealthiest state, after Puerto Rico, and is largest population center. While legally Cuba is a liberal democratic state, its economy is still very socialist. General Motors and Chrysler have both begun construction of manufacturing plants on the island to jump-start a capitalist economy, but Cuba still has the least number of start-up companies in the nation, most of which are some of the first private news organizations.
