Nebraska congressman William Jennings Bryan ran for President three times in 1896, 1900 and 1908. In 1896 and 1900 he ran against and lost to Ohio Governor William McKinley. As a result Vice President Theodore Roosevelt assumed the presidency when President McKinley was assassinated.
