The Congo, officially the Congolese Republic (German: Kongolesischen Republik) is a semi-presidential republic located in central Africa that shares borders with Equatoria to the north, Uganda to the east, Katanga and Portuguese Angola to the south, and Gabon and German Cameroon (Kamerun) to the west.
Originally established as the colony of French Congo following the Berlin Conference of 1884-85, it was captured by Germany during World War I and administered as the Protectorate of German Congo (Deutsch Kongo) for sixty years, from 1919 to 1979, when the Congo was granted independence.
