The American philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce.

Charles Sanders Peirce (10th September, 1839 - 19th April, 1914) was an American philosopher chiefly known for pragmatism and semiotics. He maintained that the whole set of the meaning of a concept lay in its practical consequences. Relatively little is known of his works because most of them are unpublished and have been lost, and only a very incomplete impression can be gained of his thought. He lived his life in poverty and died in obscurity, and it is suspected that much of his work would be very useful if it had survived.
