Cascadia, officially the Republic of Cascadia, is a nation located in western North America, and is composed of the former Canadian provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. Cascadia shares borders with Canada to the north and east, and the United States to the west (Alaska) and south (Columbia, Montana, and Dakota).

Since gaining its independence at the end of the bloody six-year Canadian Civil War in 1963, Cascadia has pursued a policy of neutrality toward the Quebec-Canada conflicts still ongoing today - namely the Arctic Wars; during the Civil War, Cascadia established a brief, and rather tenuous alliance with Quebec out of necessity only (due in part to overall Cascadian disdain toward the more violent nature of the Quebecois military). It was immediately terminated following both nations' independence. To this day, relations between Cascadia and Quebec remain rather terse at best, though each nation individually retains a separate alliance and trade agreement with the United States.

Cascadia is the most energy-independent/clean nation in the world, with half of its power requirements generated by a combination of geothermal plants, solar and wind farms, and hydroelectric facilities. The remaining half is generated by thorium molten-salt reactors (MSRs) - the designs of which were obtained from the United States in the mid-1970s, following on the heels of their first successful commercial use of a thorium MSR in Pacific City, Oregon - housed in special bunker-like facilities near the nation's largest cities - namely Calgary, Edmonton, and Regina - and even some of its most remote regions.

Since the conception and release of affordable all-electric cars in 1980 by Ford, Toyota, and Honda, the Cascadian government has imported hundreds of thousands, if not millions of the vehicles in the past fifteen years. Today, it is estimated as many as 6 to 8.5 million of Cascadia's 10.2 million citizens own electric vehicles, which have steadily improved in battery capacity in the past decade, and with the advent of electric commercial vehicles (e.g. semi trailers, buses, and taxis) in 1985, transportation systems have vastly improved as well. As such, very few of the nation's commercial vehicles are non-electric/gasoline powered any more. Government advances and subsidies are said to be in the works to provide electric vehicles to the remainder of the population and completely eliminate gas-powered vehicles by the summer of 2000 or 2001 at the latest.
