The Canadian federal election of 2007 was held on Monday, October 15, 2007 to elect members of the Canadian Parliament. The sitting majority Liberal Party suffered its worst defeat in history, losing 96 seats including that of sitting Prime Minister Carolyn Bennett and for the first time since the fall of Communism did not form the Official Opposition, replaced instead by the Social Democratic Party, which gained 41 seats. The Conservatives, led by Stephen Harper, gained 55 seats and formed a bare majority government. The election ended thirteen consecutive years of Liberal rule over Canada.
