The first European settlers to arrive in the country that is now Canada were the French. The French colony was lost to the British in 1763. Despite this and despite the arrival of Anglophone immigrants, the French language and culture remained dominant in most regions of the former colony.
Canada was granted dominion status together with Oregon in 1876. In Canada however, British rule had never been popular and so in 1964 the last formal ties with the Commonwealth were broken and Canada became a republic.
Though French is considered the Lingua Franca of the country, the English language is equally used and recognised by the national legislation.
