The Republic of Canada (French: République du Canada), commonly known as Canada, is a nation located in eastern North America. Canada is bordered by Acadia and the United States to the south and Borealia to the west. Canada is generally regarded as the successor state to New France (a former French colony in North America). Between 1763 until gaining independence in 1842, Canada was governed by the United Kingdom as the Province of Lower Canada.
Beginning in 1837, Lower and Upper Canada revolted against British colonization. With American assistance, the two Canadas gained independence, uniting under the short-lived Confederation of Canada. The Confederation would peacefully dissolve between the English-speaking west (being annexed by the USA) and the French-speaking east.
Canada is very close to France and the United States in foreign relations and even reestablished relations with the United Kingdom in 1870s. In the 1880s, France sold Saint Pierre and Miquelon to Canada.
