During the Revolutionary Wars, various scottish groups, both monarchist and republican, found themselves allied in wanting to dissolve the union with England. After managing to gain independence, a constituent assembly briefly played with the notion of asking the House of Stuart to take the throne but any possibility of a return to monarchy of any sort was destroyed by the republican sentiments that had taken hold of the population.
