Burma National Army, previously called the Burma Independence Army and Burma Defence Army, was the military force of the State of Burma (1943—1993). It collaborated with the Imperial Japanese Army during the conquest of Burma, using Japanese help to fight the British out of the country. After the State of Burma was established in 1943, the "Burma Independence Army" was renamed to "Burma Defence Army". The reformed military force numbered at 18,000 personnel by the end of 1942, and aided the Japanese in the brief Burma Campaign. They went on to help Japan in the invasion of India, fighting closely with the Indian National Army. After the Japanese victory in the war, the army was renamed the "Burma National Army".
