Following the overthrow of the monarchy in 1944, the communist party took control of the country, proclaiming the People's Republic in 1946. Today, as a founding member of the Warsaw Pact, Bulgaria has very strong ties with the Soviet Union. There are, in fact, those who say that the President is simply a puppet of the Soviet Premier.
