The British West Indies is the smallest division of the UK both in terms of population and size. It has a total population of around 150,000 and has a total area of just over 1000 sq km (though most of that territorial waters).
Much of the West indies was at one point rules by the Spanish, but though many wars much of the territory came under British control. In the 1958 the West Indies Federation was established in the hopes that it would become a single independent nation, however this quickly fell apart and the federation was dissolved.
In 1971 Nevis was split from St Kitts as its own separate colony due to internal desire for self-government. This action reduced the United Kingdoms view that either colony could become independent nations due to their small size. Despite this there was still a strong desire among the populace to become independent (which ultimately led to the creation of the Progress Party)
Over time the UK established the Kingdom of the West Indies as a self governing region to reduce the incentive of the remaining colonies to become independent, though most colonies refused to join the kingdom as the still wanted to become fully independent, rather than as they believed to become puppets of an aging super power. The division grew over the 1970's to encompass much of what remained of the British Caribbean (excluding Bermuda) to become an important part of the British realm as well as allowing the UK to maintain a moderate presence in the Caribbean.
The economy of the West Indies is mainly based around tourism with other major industries being shipping and financial services. In Saint Kitts and Nevis there was a booming sugar industry in the 1950's and 60's however this slowly declined due to rising costs and increased competition from South America.
The West Indies has its own parliament with a total of 36 seats. And makes up three seats in the British parliament

Talks of bringing Bermuda into the kingdom have been discussed. However, many politicians are unsure of such an expansion as it would offset the political landscape of the kingdom as well as forcing the kingdom to increase its logistics to support its new territory.
