Background

Since the British Republic general election, 2010 the governing Leftist Alliance had seen a drop in its support, however still remained ahead in opinion polls against the main opposition Liberal Alliance.

Candidates

Leftist Alliance The frontrunners for the Leftist Alliance Presidential candidacy were former prime minister Tony Blair, former Chancellor Gordon Brown and former leader of the Social Democrats David Owen. Ultimately Tony Blair eventually managed to secure the nomination in the candidate election.

The tensions caused by Scott's challenge would later lead to the leaving of several right wing MPs to form the National Liberal Party, of which Scott would be a leading member.
