British India was the region in the Indian subcontinent that under British control between 1757 and 1947, included areas directly administered by the United Kingdom, as well as the princely states ruled by individual rulers under the paramountcy of the British Crown. However, there were few princely states that recognized by the British Empire as independent states such as Nepal and Bhutan. The British India extended over almost all present-day India and Pakistan. In addition, at various times, it included Aden (1858-1937), British Somaliland (1884-1898), and Singapore (1858-1867). Lower and Upper Burma was also governed as the part of the British India until separated as a separate British colony in 1937.
