Bill Clements, first President of the reformed Republic of Texas

Bill Clements was the final governor of the U.S. State of Texas, and, following the Dissolution of the United States, became the first President of the Republic of Texas, serving until 1989. Clements negotiated the annexation of Oklahoma into the Texan Republic

In 1987, frustrated with the constant waves of immigration from Mexico, Clements met with Mexican President Miguel de la Madrid in Mexico City. However, de la Madrid refused to stricten immigration restrictions, saying it was a right of the Mexican people to do so. Clements then positioned Texan armed forces on the Mexican border, and bombed any immigrants trying to reach the border, with the exception of some legal immigration zones.
