The Back to the Future trilogy is a comedic science fiction adventure film series that follow the adventures of high school student Marty McFly (Matthew Broderick) and eccentric inventor and scientist Dr. Emmett Brown (Leslie Nielsen) as they use a modified DeLorean automobile to travel to different eras in the history of Hill Valley, California.

The first film was the highest-grossing film of 1985 and resulted in two sequels shot back-to-back, released in 1988 and 1989 respectively. While popular, neither sequel managed to spawn the same critical or commercial success as the first. The series launched the career of Broderick, who was previously an unknown actor with a handful of supporting sitcom and film roles, and helped make several other actors in the series household names. The series also spawned several themed rides at United Pictures Studios amusement parks around the country.
