The Papal State of Avignon (commonly known as Avignon or The Papal State) is a landlocked sovereign theocratic enclave located within the Kingdom of France.

Avignon was established as an independent state in 1506. It is distinct from the Holy See, which dates back to early Christianity and is the main episcopal see of 2.166 billion Latin and Eastern Catholic adherents around the globe. Ordinances of Avignon are published in Standard Occitan; official documents of the Holy See are issued mainly in Latin.
