The Austrian federal election of 2000 was held on Saturday, August 19 to elect the Parliament of Austria. The SPÖ, governing in a majority, dissolved Parliament on June 17 after the cabinet of Chancellor Franz Vranitzky lost a vote on a major tax and pension reform package and subsequently called a snap election after failing to earn a three-fifths majority confidence vote. The SPÖ gained three seats and 38.2 percent of the vote, extending their majority. The NVP, the official opposition, lost fifteen seats and Official Opposition status to the VA, which gained fourteen seats. The Greens won one seat, placing a member of Parliament for the first time in history. It was regarded mostly as a status-quo election, with the government returning with a slightly increased majority and the two right-wing parties switching places in opposition status.
