Athafuns I, also known by the modern version of his name, Alfonso, was King of Spain from 824 to 829. He was among the leaders of the coup that deposed his cousin Frithunanthis in 824 and took the throne in his place. Athafuns did much to restore Spanish power, such as stabilizing the economy and reforming the army, but died in a hunting accident in 829 before he was able to complete the task. He was succeeded by his son, Veremund I, who would continue his father's projects.
