The Armed Forces of Norway and Maudland (Commonly called the AFNM) is the military of both the Kingdom of Norway and its former colony, the Kingdom of Maudland. This unique situation is not mirrored anywhere else in the world, and is responsible for the somewhat confusing structure of the AFNM. The AFNM has fought in all of Antarctica's major wars, with the exception of WWI, and was the major combatant on the Allied side during the New Swabian war. The AFNM is also surprisingly large for the low number of people that inhabit Maudland and Norway, but this is due to long history of wars that Maudland in particular has experienced.

Organization and Equipment[]

The AFNM is under the overall command of King Harald V, with General Tomás Lykke as its acting commander-in-chief when the king is not in command. Below those two, however, the command structure branches. There are two defense ministers (One from the Maudlandic and one from the Norwegian parliaments) who have responsibility over their respective country's forces. Beneath them are a variety of commanders in the traditional fashion.

Norwegian Army[]

The Norwegian Army is headed by Lt-General Lars S Lervik. It is divided into two divisions and the separate Northern Brigade. The Norwegian army's equipment can be found on this page[1]

Maudlandic Army[]

The Maudlandic Army is headed by Major-General Olav Harme and is divided into four infantry divisions and one armored division. Like most of the Maudlandic branches most of its equipment comes from its Norwegian counterpart. However it does use some unique equipment;

  • Beskytter tank, the Beskytter is a Maudlandic tank based off the British Centurion tank. During his time as Minister of Defense Thobias Mjoen oversaw the competition for the Norwegian army's new MBT. The main competitors were the French AMX-30, the German Leopard 1 and the British Chieftain however there was also a proposal by the Maudlandic Ny Bergen kjøretøyet fungerer which would become the Beskytter. It was a modification of the Centurion for winter conditions and mounting a smaller gun which allowed for heavier armor and a more powerful engine. The smaller gun was the reason it lost the competition, the plans were shelved and the 150 tanks set aside by the company were put into storage.
During the New Swabian counterattack the lack of Maudlandic tanks and armored vehicles was crippling the Maudlandic attempts to defend their home territories. Remembering the previous trials Mjoen ordered the engineers at the Ny Bergen kjøretøyet fungerer to solve the problems with the gun and to have the tanks ready for the defense of Ny Kristiansand. They were able to solve the problem of the gun by fitting it with new AP rounds that would penetrate the armor before exploding. However production issues prevented the Maudlandic Army from fielding more than one squadron during the Defense of Ny Kristiansand. Despite the defeat their the tanks proved themselves well and the company were able to push out 43 tanks for the defense of Ny Bergen and they worked well throughout the rest of the war and have remained in service up to the present day.

Norwegian Navy[]

Maudlandic Navy[]

The Maudlandic Navy is the second largest navy in Antarctica in terms of ship numbers and the largest in terms of Tonnage. It is however rather outdated in terms of ship design with only three ships under ten years old, This does include its de facto flagship the aircraft carrier HNoMS Huginn its sister ship the LPH HNoMS Muninn and the heavy destroyer HNoMS Mjölnir. The Current Maudlandic navy uses the following ship class's.

  • Odin Class Carrier

Named after Odin's two eagles the Odin class carriers were ordered in the late 90's to replaced the rusting and crippled HNoMS Ark Royal that had been purchased from Britain in the aftermath of the South Atlantic War. Costs and problems related to the experimental EMCTOBAR system meant that only one, the Huginn was completed to original specifications with the second becoming the 2nd largest Helicopter Carrier ever built (Although it has a shorter flight deck the British Ocean has a greater tonnage). The Huginn weighs 53,000 tons fully loaded and carries an air group of 21 F2 Downfalls, 16 SR3 Buckaneers and a flight of helicopters while the Muninn has a flexible helicopter group that changes according to the situation.

  • Thor Class Destroyers

The Thor class actually encompasses two separate designs built of the same hull. The first design is the Servant class named after servants of the god Thor, This is a fairly traditional Air Defense destroyer with large numbers of SAM Launchers and DP Guns that was built for the Maudlandic and Norwegian navy's as a variant of the Hunt destroyer in the 70's. The Hammer Class is a unique class of one, The pet project of former Premier Tomás Lykke, it exemplifies his own personality and his a heavy destroyer/light cruiser with a huge broadside and several torpedo tubes. It took seven years to build as problems emerged with fitting similar firepower to a light cruiser on a small destroyer hull and even when completed the Mjolnir suffered from stability problems only solved when the hull was enlarged.

  • Jørgen Gunnarsson Løvland Class Destroyer

The Maudlandic navy has by the benefit of nature, a very different set of naval requirements to most navies. The Jørgen Gunnarsson Løvland destroyer was a result of these requirements. Effectively they are Hunt II Destroyers with slight modification for antarctic conditions. Most have been withdrawn from service and replaced by the Thor Destroyers.

The Maudlandic navy contributed to the design and production of the Nansen Frigates, receiving several of the class when they were built.

When the Norwegian navy decommissioned its Hauk patrol boats it passed them onto the Maudlandic navy.

  • Type 209 Submarine

The Maudlandic navy ordered four 209 submarines with Antarctic modifications in 1986. The modifications were mostly involved with fitting AIP systems allowing the Maudlandic 209's to remain under water far longer than most conventional submarines.

  • Amundsen Class Support ship

The Amundsen class is the largest class of support ship in Antarctica. It is designed to supply an entire AFNM Naval squadron in the field and is also equipped with a ice breaker and keeps the Maudlandic harbors open during the winter months.

Norwegian Air Force[]

Maudlandic Air Force[]

The Maudlandic Air Force is one of the most powerful on the continent. Although it is not as prestigious as the New Swabian air force or as large as the Belingurazian air force it has spent more money on technological advancement than any other navy on the continent, often developing odd technology to offset its low numbers. However the low budget of the MAF means that they often cobble together old technology, the USAF General Philip M. Breedlove said this after the test flight of the MAF Bucaneer SR.3

"The Maudlandic Air Force are the scavenger's of the Technological world, most of the time what they cobble together is second rate prototypes that never see the light of day. But sometimes, just sometimes those cobbled together creations produce something brilliant. The F1 Lykke fighters were a brilliant upgrade of the F-4 Phantom into something that could challenge the new F-16's, The F-2 Downfall was a innovative design that took the failed VFW VAK 191 and turned it into one of the finest naval Air Superiority Fighters ever designed. And now with the SR.3 they have developed what I consider to be the greatest low level strike fighter ever developed. It is with this in mind that I am pleased to announce that the United States Air Force will be purchasing three squadrons with an option for a further ten."

The Maudlandic Air Force currently has the following aircraft in its inventory:

Aircraft Origin Type Version In Service Notes

Maudlandic Fleet Air Arm[]

The Maudlandic Fleet Air Arm is one of the oldest Naval Air Services in the world, it began life in 1917 when the Norwegian Parliament authorised the Maudlandic local authorities to purchase four seaplanes to form the Colonial Naval Air Service. This grew to become the largest Naval Service on the Continent, during the Second World War it was reinforced with American naval bombers on loan but only after the war had ended did it grow considerably. Under a series of militant CNAS commanders they bought up large numbers of civilian aircraft that could easily be converted to military uses. In fact by the time of the reformation of the Norwegian military in the late 60's the Colonial Naval Air Service was several times larger than the equivilant Colonial Air Service.

Although its role was still officially a civilian service the CNAS was the largest naval service on the continent when the New Swabian War began when it finally became a military service. In the New Swabian War the CNAS served a more active role than the CAS in the beginning with CNAS planes attacking Nazi ground troops and helping to decimate what existed of the New Swabian Navy. Since the final reformation with Maudlandic independence the FAA retained its elite position and was reinforced with more modern planes, Currently the FAA has the following planes:

Aircraft Origin Type Version In Service Notes
Combat Aircraft
MAM Bucaneer UK/Maudland Strike Fighter SR.4/SR.5 42 Most Buccaneers are in the FAA.
F2 Downfall Maudland/Germany/GB Air Superiority Fighter 68 Based on a variety of old NATO VTOL fighters combined with new engines, weapons and avionics

WMD's[]

Officially the Maudlandic armed forces have never possessed or attempted to develop weapons of mass destruction and claim to abide by the various international treaties that regulate weapons. However, the reality is somewhat different, Terrified by the prospect that the New Swabians might have developed WMD's the administration of Thobias Mjoen went behind the back of the Norwegian government and set up research teams at the South Ny Oslo and Vennskapsjøen bases.

These teams worked on a series of technological fail safes to be enacted in the event that Ny Bergen, Ny Kristainsand and the Carl Gustav fortress had fallen. These could then be enacted at the digression of the premier from anywhere with radio capabilities through a code that would be kept under lock and key. Unable to get the equipment they needed for nuclear weapons the fail safes were mostly based on conventional technology, These fail safes ranged from the comparatively small to used in counter attacks (A series of advanced cluster bombs with miniaturised fuel air bomblets) to what Mjoen called the last throw protocol, this was a series of 13 missiles that were based underground and in secret bases, only to be used if there was no other options, Armed with both conventional high explosive bunker buster warheads and fuel air explosives they were to be launched at Neumayer, devastating it and bringing the war to a close.

In addition to being launched by the premier they could also be used by his vice premier who during the build up to the war was never allowed to be present in the same city as Mjoen. After the war ended the program was officially ended and eventually declassified although many believe the facilities still exist to be used should the need arise .

Bases[]

Naval Bases[]

  • Ny Bergen Naval Base

The main Maudlandic naval base and home to the majority of the Maudlandic Navies surface vessels. It was once a separate part of the massive Ny Oslo naval base where dangerous cargo was unloaded away from what was then the largest city in the colony. Today all of the Maudlandic Navies non FAA vessels are stored there in the summer and in the winter they are joined by the HMoMS Amundsen which helps keep the harbour free of ice. Ny Bergen naval base is also home to the Maudlandic naval collage and winter training facility.

  • Ny Oslo Naval Base

The only Ice free naval base in Maudland and home to the FAA and its ships. It is also the home of the Maudlandic Navies high command and its flagship the HMoMS Ark Royal. It is one of the largest ports on the continent although it has slipped from the height of its popularity in the early 50's when a combination of the ice free harbor and nearby air base made it the so called gateway to Antarctica. Ny Oslo naval base is also the home of the Maudlandic navies high command.

  • South Ny Oslo Naval Base

The southern Ny Oslo base is the most ice covered port in Maudland, its only permanently ice free areas are the heated docking bays for its submarine complement, it is also isolated from the Maudlandic transport network and is rumoured to be home to the Maudlandic navies Research and Development which is a sinister base rumoured to have unsavoury weapons development's.

Air Base[]

  • Naval Air Base Ny Oslo

The Ny Olso naval air base is the home base of the Fleet Air Arm and is the second largest air base in Maudland. It is mostly used as the civilian Ny Oslo airport as its three runways are only use for military flights in the absence of one of Maudlands carriers in port. Instead its military use is mainly as the home of the FAA's search and rescue branch.

  • Ny Kristainsand Air Complex

The huge and complex Ny Kristainsand air complex is home to two thirds of the Maudlandic Air Force. It contains the Maudlandic Air Forces advanced striking force of Buccaneer bombers as well as a mix of F1 Air Superiority fighters and Saab Gripen multi role fighters that exist on high alert to respond to any incursions into Maudlandic territory as well as the transport section. It is also home to the high command and training facilities and has five runways to deal with its large demand. The complex also contains an army base and is protected by a huge wall, alongside the Carl Gustav Fortress it was the last Maudlandic base to fall in the New Swabian assault.
