  • The beginning demands of the Arctic Treaty.
  • The modified Arctic Treaty, after the negotiation with Greenland over "Arvidbjod".
  • The final terms of the Arctic Treaty, after the UCI claimed that more Inuit lived in those islands than Vinlanders.
< Main Page

The Arctic Treaty of 1695 divided up the islands in the Arctic between Vinland, Greenland, and the Inuit. It began as a treaty between Vinland and Greenland, and caused even more conflicts than it was trying to solve.

First Treaty (December 9, 1694)

These were the original terms of the treaty. In short, Vinland wanted all the land not belonging to Greenland at the time, which they were going to separate into its own ethnically Inuit region.

Vinlandic Terms

  • Vinland gets all the islands in the Arctic.
  • Islands within two miles of the Greenlandic coast will be given to Greenland.
  • Special islands with extremely high Inuit population will not be claimed by either Vinland or Greenland, and instead will go to the UCI.
  • All the Arctic islands north of Nord Helluland and gained from this treaty will be separated into the autonomous zone of Angirrajuq (meaning "at home"), and will be run by Vinland and the Inuit together.

Greenlandic Terms

  • Greenlandic Whalers and Fishers will have free reign in the regions around Nord Helluland and Angirrajuq.
  • Greenland has the right to request help from Vinland in any major war.
  • In exchange for military help, Greenland will never try to gain the Vinlandic Arctic back from Angirrajuq.

Second Treaty (January 6, 1695)

After Greenland requested land in the Arctic, Vinland reluctantly gave them a large island in the north. Because of this, they cancelled the alliance promised in the treaty (even though one would later be signed between the two nations regardless).

Vinlandic Terms

  • Vinland gets all the islands in the Arctic that have not been given to Greenland or the native Inuit.
  • Vinland is prohibited from doing business around Greenlandic islands, unless they receive explicit permission to.

  • Vinland will give the island of Arvidbjod (OTL Ellesmere Island) to Greenland, which will shortly be renamed Umingmak Nuna.
  • In exchange for free whaling, Greenland will never try to gain the Vinlandic Arctic back from Angirrajuq.

Third Treaty (March 16, 1695)

After the Inuit wanted land also, Vinland reluctantly gave it to them as well. Of course, this gave them the chance to abolish their planned Inuit region, which would have gotten its own autonomous government otherwise.

Vinlandic Terms

  • Vinland gets all the islands in the Arctic that have not been given to Greenland or the native Inuit.
  • Vinland is prohibited from doing business around Greenlandic islands, unless they receive explicit permission to.
  • All islands gained from this treaty will either be melded into Nord Helluland or closer-by provinces.

Greenlandic Terms

  • Greenlandic whalers and fishers will have free reign in the regions around Nord Helluland.
  • Vinland will give the island of Arvidbjod (OTL Ellesmere Island) to Greenland, which will shortly be renamed Umingmak Nuna.
  • In exchange for free whaling, Greenland will never try to gain the Vinlandic Arctic back from Vinland.

Inuit Terms

  • The islands described as "over 70% Inuit" will go to the UCI, and Vinland will get all those not claimed.
  • Vinland will give the Inuit some materials in order to modernize, over a period of the next twenty years.
