Annette Reading (born September 2, 1946) is an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court, serving since September 2001, when she was appointed by President Steve Martin to replace George Sanchez. She previously served as the United States Representative for Rhode Island's 2nd Congressional District from 1979-1987 (succeeding Betty Davis) as a Nationalist, and later served as a US District Court Judge for the District of Rhode Island from 1987 to 1994, and as the Chief Justice of the Rhode Island Supreme Court (an elected non-partisan position) from 1994 until her appointment in 2001. Her appointment was controversial at its time as she was a former elected partisan official, though her appointment moved the 13-member Court slightly to the left.
