Although the country was neutral throughout the war, US public opinion favored the EA. At first, President Woodrow Wilson favored the idea of joining the War, but the election of Harding in 1920 cancelled that idea. Trade with Japan, the USSR, and Thailand was halted in 1923, when it was almost positive the EA would win, at least in Europe. Several non-governmental merchants traded arms with the EA powers, mainly the UK and Germany.
