Jacqueline KennedyJames M. Stewart
James Maitland Stewart was born on May 20, 1908 in Indiana, Pennsylvania. He came from a strong Military background and so joined the US' small peacetime army as a lieutenant in June 1926. In 1929 he was promoted to Captain and given command of Fort Smith, Indiana. In early 1935 newly promoted Major Stewart accompanied President Franklin D. Roosevelt on his European tour as representative of the US army. When national service was introduced in 1939, Stewart was promoted immediately to Colonel and appointed deputy Commander of Combined operations. Following the German victories in Europe in the summer of 1940, the US government introduced partial conscription and consequently all officers were elevated a rank. Brigadier General Stewart was made assistant division commander for the 7th Infantry Division. When the US entered the war in December 1941 the 7th Division was in New York and was the first US Division to head for Europe. Serving in North Africa Stewart would often be seen near the front, whilst visiting a Battalion headquarters in April 1942 Stewart was hit by an artillery shell and spent the next four months in hospital in Algiers. Whilst in hospital, Stewart was visited by Senator Thomas E. Dewey and the two became lifelong friends. In December 1942 Stewart was made Major General and was ordered home to command a division, he didn't again see combat until June 1944 when he landed as part of operation Fritz on the south coast of France. In November he was ordered home and was given command of the New York State defence force. He served at this post until the end of the war. In 1946 he was promoted to full General (having skipped Lt General). In 1949 Stewart was appointed ADC to the President, now his good friend Thomas Dewey. The two had a good relationship and this was only stopped by Dewey's decision not to run for a second term. However upon Dewey's resignation, Stewart was made Chief of Staff of the US army, remaining in this position until 1963.
