Alexander Nikolaevich Yakovlev (Russian: Алекса́ндр Никола́евич Я́ковлев; December 2, 1923 – October 18, 2005) was a Soviet politician and historian who served as the second President of the Soviet Union from 1992-2002 as the first democratically elected leader in the regions history. Yakovlev has become known as the "godfather of glasnost" for his intellectual contribution to Mikhail Gorbachev's reform program of glasnost and perestroika.
