Musical Style

Early in the years of the band, before they were signed, they were described as a textbook "Power Metal" band with fantasy and medieval inspired lyrics. Following their signature to (Label) Records, their sound took a turn into the previously unexplored territory of Pirate Metal, which took influences from the upbeat and technically demanding sound of Power Metal, and many of the instruments rarely used in the contest of metal, akin to Folk Metal. Lyrics are inspired by stereotypical Western pirates, and using synthesized accordion and other instruments to give it the feel of a sea-shanty. Lyrics take inspiration heavily from the Western stereotype of pirates and fantasy and mythology to a certain extent, dealing with krakens, giant whales and other mythical beasts. The band also plays on the fact that pirates are often shown to be jovial, with many of their songs showcasing jolly pirate behavior. Alestorm has also been a major player in the heavy metal scene around the world, and has influenced several contemporary bands.
