Abkhazia (Abkhaz: Аҧсны; Russian: Абхазия) is a republic of the Union of Soviet Sovereign Republics located in the Caucasus.

Prior to 1992, Abkhazia was an autonomous republic of the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic. After Georgia declared independence in April of 1991, Abkhazia declared their desire to remain in the Soviet Union. Abkhazia, along with South Ossetia, declared its independence from Georgia. In response, Tbilisi ordered troops into the region to reestablish Georgian control of the region. Soviet President Alexander Yakovlev responded by sending Soviet troops to protect Abkhazia, beginning the Caucasus War. After a month of fighting, the Treaty of Java was signed between Abkhazia, Georgia, South Ossetia and the Soviet Union. The treaty called for Georgia to immediately withdraw its troops from the two regions and recognized Abkhazia and South Ossetia's independence. A few days later Abkhazia along with South Ossetia signed the New Union Treaty and became full republics of the Soviet Union.
