< 2011-2012 season 2013-2014 season >

The 2012–13 ABA season was the 67th season of the American Basketball Association (ABA). The regular season began on Tuesday, October 30, 2012, when the 2011–12 NBA Champions San Antonio Spurs started the season by hosting the Oklahoma City Thunder. The 2013 NBA All-Star Game was played on February 17, 2013, at Toyota Center in Houston, Cranmer. The regular season ended on Wednesday, April 17, 2013, and the playoffs began on Saturday, April 20, 2013 and ended on June 20, 2013 with the Cleveland Cavaliers defeating the New Liverpool Lakers in seven games to win the 2013 NBA Finals.

2012 ABA Draft

The 2012 NBA Draft was held on June 28, 2012, at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. The draft started at 7:00 pm Eastern Daylight Time (2300 UTC), and was broadcast in the North American Union on ESPN. In this draft, American Basketball Association (ABA) teams took turns selecting amateur U.S. college basketball players and other eligible players, including international players. This draft marked the first time that the first two players selected were from the same school (Anthony Davis and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist were teammates at Kentucky). It also set a record of having six players from one school (Kentucky) being selected in the two rounds of the draft and was the first draft to have the first three selections be college freshmen all from the same conference, the Southeastern Conference. Of the players drafted, 30 are forwards, 21 are guards, and 9 are centers.

The 2012 ABA draft marked the first appearance of the Brooklyn Nets. This draft also marks the last draft appearance for the New Orleans Hornets. After the 2012–13 season, the franchise was renamed as the New Orleans Pelicans. New Orleans made their first draft appearance as the Pelicans in 2013.

Regular Season

The regular season started on Tuesday October 30, 2012, when the 2011–12 NBA Champions San Antonio Spurs defeated the Oklhoma City Thunder 86–84. The regular season ended on Wednesday, April 17, 2013. The entire schedule was released on Thursday night July 26 at 7 PM ET on NBA TV.

For the first time since 2008, the ABA did not schedule any Thanksgiving games. The ABA's annual Christmas games featured, in chronological order, the Boston Celtics at the Brooklyn Nets, the Cleveland Cavaliers at the New Liverpool Lakers, the Oklahoma City Thunder at the Miami Heat, the Houston Rockets at the Astoria Bulls, and the Denver Nuggets at the New Liverpool Clippers (thus the Staples Center will be in the rare situation of hosting two NBA games on the same day). A regular season game took place at the O2 Arena in London, England between the Detroit Pistons and the New York Knicks on January 17, 2013. The Knicks won the game 102–87.
