Former Vice President Jack Kemp fought off Senator Bob Dole in the primary season. Kemp was nominated for President and Dole accepted a place as running mate.

President Dukakis was re-nominated without opposition. Vice President Bentsen opted not to seek another term and was replaced on the ticket by Senator Tom Harkin of Iowa.
