- Ivan Molotov, head of the People's Union of Russia, dies. In his absence, a power struggle briefly ensues in the PUR, which ends with Nikola Abakumov takes power. He begins introducing more liberal reforms, and in a Secret Speech, promise to end the oppressive Molotovist ideology.

- China's Cultural Revolution ends. Liu Beng has now secured his position of power, with most of the 'capitalist elements' removed. Over 30 million people have died, however, from famine and political persecution.
