Aftermath"Of all the disasters this land has ever seen, this is truly the worst it has ever seen or ever will see. Praise be to God for all whom have survived."
- Confederate Astronaut John F. Kennedy
"I wish with the strength of all of the German people that I could go back and stop this. But alas, man must now forge on through the dark."
- Fascist Chancellor Adolf Hitler
"What hath God wrought?"
- Confederate President Christopher R. Smith
These quotes sum up the worst disaster ever to befall mankind. As a species, man had succeeded in destroying itself and the rest of the world. They have not only killed themselves, but every other living thing as well. But as always, man finds a way to survive. It is truly amazing that we've survived at all.
The temperatures have plunged from the massive amounts of dust filling the atmosphere. The human population has dropped from three billion to only 300 million. People everywhere starve from the lack of sunlight killing plants and the radiation causing cancer in the 'lucky' few who've survived the apocalypse.
The first rain after the war was also devastating. The cloud droplets had mixed with the radioactive dust, and began the Bergensen Process. The rain came almost a week after the bombs fell and landed in many of the unaffected fields and scorched the skin of those outside. Almost 13,000 people immediately died from the rains and an estimated 7,000,000 were killed later in their lives from cancer caused by the rain.
But the first few rains after the bombs fell were not the worst of the change in weather. The nuclear clouds of dust blocked the sun's rays and were able to reflect away the heat as well. The effect was a global drop in temperature of almost ten degrees.
Soon the world was on its steady course towards recovery, but it would be a long, painful route.
The Republic of Russia was one of the firs to try to re-establish nation-wide government. Moscow was devastated by nuclear missiles from the Fascist ICBM bunkers in Siberia that were not known to the Russians.
30 miles outside of Moscow the Russian President founded New Moscow where he quickly established a communist style government. He implemented labor quotas and strict regulation of supplies. This saved the Muscovites from utter ruin during the first winter. When spring finally arrived the ground was totally unsuitable for farming because of the massive amounts of radioactive rain that had seeped into the earth.
New Moscow slowly grew as many people attempted to re-settle Moscow or at the very least scavenge the technology and materials in the city to either sell or use.
When summer arrived the people were starving from the lack of food and soon the city fell into ruin as people abandoned the city to try to find good places to try to grow food. By August the city was abandoned and the first settlement after the bombs fell was deserted.
This was repeated countless times in Russia as people tried desperately to find any source of food. Soon Russia was a land mostly made of nomads and scavengers looking for food and trade stuffs. Many small farms were established in the spring and where abandoned by winter. Thus was the average life for a Russian nomad.
Right outside of Russia the Polish were having a slightly better time at it. Fewer nuclear missiles hit Nowa Polska-Ukraina then Russia or other parts of Europe. The main reason was that it was mostly populated by the 'sub-humans' in the eyes of the Fascist and refugees in the eyes of the west.
Immediately after the war a group of survivors in Minsk re-settle the city as it was one of the few cities in Europe not devastated by nuclear fire. The Chancellor of Polska-Ukraina was dead though as he was in Berlin during the time of the destruction. Soon the city-state of Minsk was growing. The agriculture was still very little and many died from starvation but with people coming more work was able to be done and more crops were able to be grown.
During the winter most of their crops died and almost half starved but they never gave up hope as soon the small city became the Republic of Minsk.
Elsewhere in Eastern Europe the problems were not as easy to solve. Many in the Ukraine had died from nuclear warheads destroying Kiev and ports in the Crimea. In the Ukraine the people soon adopted nomadic lifestyle following whatever herds of animals they could find and capturing or killing them.
In the Baltic the area was almost totally devoid of life as multiple rockets destroyed whatever life used to live there. But there are reports of nomads from the Ukraine reaching up into the Baltic for short periods of time. Also the Ukrainian nomads report that there was some strange people living there that were only called demons. They warned all travelers to stay away from the Baltic.
HoffnungBerlin had been destroyed by the first Confederate Helios rocket and was hit by several others. Thus the city was an irradiated hulk of twisted metal. Adolf Hitler had surprisingly survived the blast and realized what Himmler convinced him to do and had what remained of his SS guards (about 34) shoot Himmler. They then ventured out into the countryside and picked up any survivors along the way. They found about 60 more people who had survived unaffected leaving those whom had been injured too severely to be of any use or were of non-Aryan descent.
When they finally climbed over the last rubble before entering the county-side the people signed the Verkündigung der Hoffnung (English: Proclamation of Hope) it established the small city of Hoffnung which incorporated the ruined Berlin and the surrounding country side. The proclamation established the city as a republic with the first elections taking place directly after the signing, Hitler was unanimously chosen.
Hoffnung was off to a pleasant start as Hitler organized what was left of Berlin into an agriculturally efficient society with nearly everyone helping work in the fields, even Hitler pitched in from time to time. The city was growing from survivors from what remained of Germany coming to what they hoped was a source of organization and to (obviously) look for food.
Central Europe was mostly an irradiated wasteland. Almost 95% of the people died immediately in the nuclear blast or the fires started byte intense heat. Hanover was already destroyed by B-52 bombers before the bombs fell so it was less irradiated as it was downgraded to a minor target. A cult was started by the people who've survived in Hanover that taught that there was a city of gold and honey located somewhere in Europe. They set off and were never heard from again. People report that it seemed as though they just stood up and left. Beds were still made. Food was still stocked in the shelves and sometimes even a half-eaten dinner was found.
The city of Rennes in Brittany was indirectly hit as the nuclear weapon that was supposed to hit it landed 2 miles off from where it was supposed to. Thus the city was still badly damaged but not nearly as bad so as Berlin or Paris.
The people whom lived in Rennes were all dead when the Survivants (English: Survivors) arrived they found the city a scorched hulk and nearly devoid of all life. Out of the entire town only three people were found and they died before spring arrived. The Survivants had seen many other cities and had even considered going to Paris but decided that this place would have to be it. They settled the city and took what they needed. Whole houses were torn down for its supplies and the Survivants lived in their first settlements since the bombs fell.
They, unlike many of the survivor cities did not immediately seek out for agriculture. They instead took advantage of their equestrian mounts and hunted down what remained of the wildlife. During the spring they rode out and hunted while gathering any sort of edible plants they could find.
They survived like this until the early winter which arrived in September. They ate what they had stored and where able to survive.
Western Europe was perhaps one of the most devastated regions on the planet. The Fascists launched a huge amount of nuclear missiles at the Army of Southern England and the Army of Wales.
Paris was totally leveled along with Orleans, Madrid, Gibraltar, Amsterdam, and Luxembourg. Although they were not the only cities destroyed they were the hardest hit. They were unrecognizable from before the war and some of the fires in the cities did not go out until August.
Survivors were extremely few and far between with those that were around being barbaric hunters and gatherers. But one of the largest groups was in Brittany, the Survivants, they were primarily nomads but they had significant settlements in Brest and Rennes.
Eastern Coast of North America
This is perhaps what hell is like.
- John C. Calhoun in his diary found in 1983The Eastern Coast was an irradiated nightmare. Clouds of radiation hung in the air would kill a man in three hours if he was unprotected. Dust lingered in the atmosphere more heavily over the East Coast then other areas.
There were nearly no survivors with those that had survived the blasts and the fires were killed by the radiation.
Every city and area along the East Coast was a dead zone with literally no life above bacteria. What little plants remained after the bombs fell were killed in the first radioactive slurry rain.
But there is unimaginable wealth there as well because as soon as the first nuclear missile was detected the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the Declaration of Independence were thrust deep under ground along with most of great documents stored in DC. Also under the city is a huge vault filled with gold and precious metals. This attracted an untold treasure seekers to their untimely deaths.
Mississippi-Ohio LandsThe Mississippi-Ohio Lands is what the Republic of St.Louis calls the land that the FSA held between 1944 and 1948.
The Mississippi-Ohio Lands was relatively undamaged by the nuclear war. The areas around the Great Lakes were hit several times due to the major manufacturing centers in the area but besides that it was roughly undisturbed. People out in the woods were more plentiful then in other areas and as such had one of the higher populations after the war.
The city of Charity was founded in the June after the bombs fell. It was deep in the woods of Ohio and attracted many peoples into the area. The Charity dwellers were some of the most rugged individuals that the country had to offer and even before the war they often had to hunt for their own food.
Often people whom lived in Charity helped one another with finding food and growing it. Ohio's land was also one of the best for farming as the radiation in Ohio is dramatically lower then even the neighboring state of Pennsylvania.
Transylvania was the name of the land in between the East Coast states, the Ohio River, below the Ohio-Mississippi Lands, and the Mississippi River as called by the Republic of St. Louis.
Most of southern Transylvania was devastated and some of the radiation from its untimely devastation rose up into the northern Transylvania. But mostly Northern Transylvania was much like the Southern Mississippi-Ohio Lands. The only main difference was that there were less trees and more hills. Also the area had no major settlement with most of the 'rednecks' preferring not to live close to one another in fear of starting a government although there are some small trading towns where they go to (bet you couldn't guess this) trade what they have for what someone else has.
The City of St. Louis was founded in 1764 and has survived ever since. The nuclear missile that was supposed to hit the city was deactivated for unknown reasons and the missile landed almost 100 miles away from St. Louis doing no damage to its targeted city, but unfortunately (or fortunately?) it did land on a house of a bigoted, racist, fear mongering, evil person who never even paid tips to waiters (or so the official records of St. Louis say).
St. Louis quickly grew into the largest city in North America (mostly by default since the rest of the big cities were destroyed). St. Louis' schools also began to teach some of the smartest people in the nation's history.
St. Louis after the first two months was able to re-establish a stable power grid and was expanding along the Mississippi River and was able to incorporate many small villages of people whom had established themselves in the small safe zone. Out of 44 villages only three were hostile and were promptly eliminated.
The St. Louis Armory was the home of the famous gun maker Kalashnikov and were thus able to continue building AK-52. Materials were able to be gathered by trading with bands of nomads whom had scavenged metals from the ruined cities and they were able to get the wood by creating a small forest on the East bank of the Mississippi River. But soon ammunition would be a non-problem as three scouts were able to find the Confederation of States Strategic Armory.
The CSSA was found with no survivors inside. The scouts were able to crack the first door open and found a room roughly 200 x 200ft filled to the ceiling (57ft) with crates of ammunition. The St. Louis Army extracted most of the crates of ammo into the St. Louis Armory. Almost 250,000,000 bullets were taken with many more rooms being found. In one of the rooms it held Browning Automatic Rifles along with almost 200 crates of 30-06 ammo. Soon the St. Louis Armory was one of the most well equipped in the world. The CSSA was soon officially guarded by the St. Louis Army.
Saint Louis was extremely prosperous and was perhaps the last remnants of civilization in the world.
Greater Louisiana is the land that is between the Mississippi River and the Rockies as defined by St. Louis.
Greater Louisiana is unimaginably huge. It is perhaps the largest plains anywhere in the world. Its hugeness caused many farmers to move there for the simple reason of being able to farm for many many miles before they hit any sort of civilization. The full colonization of Greater Louisiana was not complete when the bombs fell thus it is mostly empty as any cities that did exist were utterly devastated.
There are an untold number of small farms that exist are mostly a small island of semi-civilization that exist. Although there are rumors of a civilization still existing in Little Rock, Arkansas but so far St. Louisian scouts haven't returned from Little Rock so it is unconfirmed.
Alta California consists of the states of California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah.
Alta California is mostly an area of mountains and deserts. Many peoples live here in villages and ruined cities. It is much unchanged except that all of the major cities have been destroyed. And on an interesting note Las Vegas was hit four times while most places were hit only once, the area is an irradiated hulk not unlike the East Coast.
Oregon Country is comprised of the states of Oregon, Washington, and Idaho which is otherwise known as the historic Oregon.
Oregon is mostly unpopulated and no scouts have returned from trips to Oregon Country so its status is currently unknown but it is believed to be mostly destroyed as the scouts detected higher then usual radiation.
CanadaCanada was underpopulated before the war began but after the war its population was reduced to roaming herds of nomads and sheep...lots of sheep.
Mexico is now (if possible) even poorer then before the war. People there have less then the sheep herders in Canada. They barely own the clothes on their backs. The former Federales have turned into vicious gangs of raiders that have been spotted as far north as Oregon Country.
Most of the governments have been overthrown by the people and most islands have an anarchist form of government (yes, I know this is an oxymoron). People fish and eat what they can catch and grow and life goes on as usual on a little island paradise of radioactive fun.
Alaska was one of the few states not to be attacked by the nuclear missiles. The Governor of Alaska declared himself the Chancellor of Alaska and proclaimed the state as the Republic of Alaska. Alaskan scouts were soon plunging deep into the former Yukon Territory but so far St. Louisian scouts and Alaskan scouts have not met so their existence is unknown to each other.
Viva la Revolution!
- Che Guevara
The United States of South America even before the war was in deep trouble. The military had overthrown the government, then the people, then a coalition of mercenaries hired from the wealthiest individuals and then by another group of rich individuals. As a result was that most of South America was largely ignored by the main fighting between the CS and the UFS.
Although many wonder why the CS only fired 4 missiles at the USSA it is actually easy as they had very few nuclear missiles to begin with so they wanted to destroy the main enemy first. Unfortunately the world more or less ended before any more missiles could be launched at South America.
Thus the USSA was left as the sole remaining entity from before the war. The South American Army tried to invade Panama but contact was lost. Before another expedition could be sent the USSA dissolved into a communist revolution.
Che Guevara quickly rose in the ranks of the Communist Revolutionaries. They soon defeated the skeleton army and burned the capital of Caracas to the ground. The government officially ceded control to the communists on the 27th of July and the United Socialist Republic was announced with Che Guevara as the General Secretary.
The USR quickly took possession of all of the private property and killed many of the large business owners. The government then implemented strict quotas among the people and soon everything was running like a clock. Unfortunately people don't really like being treated as clocks and after only four months the USR descended into chaos as the "Great Socialist Republics that only Marx himself could've made better" fell apart. South America descended into many tiny fiefdoms, republics, monarchies, dictatorships, communist republics, etc. The USR was able to hold on to a few select territories but it was already a nearly destroyed state.
Australia is the only true prewar nation left. Although its communications had been severed with anyone in the outside world life still goes on. Australia was hit by only a few missiles during the war as they had little to no military threat to pose towards the UFS or the USSA (which in total launched 17 missiles with the other 42 still missing or waiting for the order to launch in their silos).
The Aussies set up a provisional government and voted on what sort of nation they should be. The overwhelming majority was to claim themselves to be the last surviving part of the Confederation of States and declared themselves as such. They quickly elected a new President and Senate and set to work making Australia a working post-dooms day society. They often helped out farmers by gifting them money to work the land and many other things. The President was soon successfully managing one of the largest post-doomsday nation in the world.
The Pacific Islands weren't hit at all except for Hawaii and Midway which are now radioactive islands. So life goes on in many of the Pacific Islands.
The Honshu (Japanese home islands) was bombed multiple times from both sides and the Honshu was mostly destroyed but the government was still functional as the Japanese people did not tend to lose control of themselves after a major disaster. The Japanese Emperor affirmed his power and overthrew the Shogun which was trying to establish himself. The Empire of Japan was soon under the complete control of the Emperor and he ruled with absolute power. The generals attempted to over throw the Emperor and establish a Shogunate but the Imperial Guard was able to hold them off with the rest of Kyoto doing so as well.
Soon the generals stopped and everything was quickly calmer. The Emperor sent the rebellious generals that he deemed too rebellious to conquer the Korean Peninsula. The Generals did as they were told and did not question their God-Emperor any longer. Many people began to starve as Japan's high population but low farmland was quickly starving the nation, soon Japan was in a major famine and nearly everyone in Japan suffered, but did not complain.
Korea was hit multiple times by nuclear missiles and most of the government quickly collapsed. People were quickly starving and the situation wasn't helped when the Japanese Army landed on their shores. The people fiercely resisted but were soon crushed when Japan threatened to use nuclear weapons on the people (it was really a bluff as all of Japan's nukes were used when the bombs fell).
The Korean people suffered heavily during the famine but any sort of resistance was destroyed by the powerful Japanese military. All protest were also quickly quelled when the Emperor threatened to "Make the Day of Devastation seem as though it were a summer day at the beach."
China was also devastated during the nuclear exchange. Hundreds of thousands of people were killed and most technology was sent back to the time when China was originally divided between different kingdoms. Soon China was little more then an agrarian society.
When the Communist invaded many could put up little resistance but some of the rural farmers created the CRA which was a major thorn in the Communist's side.
Union of Communist Republics
Siberia had always been a cesspool for Communist agents and after the bombs fell all inhibitions were thrown off. The Siberians declared themselves the Union of Communist Republics. They quickly asserted their control over Mongolia and made it the Mongolian Communist Republic. The Chinese peasants in the south were terrified of the Communist and when the UCR invaded the Chinese they could put up little resistance. But it was soon a major guerrilla war as many of the farmers refused to recognize them as the owners of China and created the Chinese Republican Army.
The CRA attacked many of the installations that the Communist set up even when they were dispensing (often nearly inedible) food. Soon the CRA was a major guerrilla force and a major thorn in their side. The CRA was able to gain some modern weaponry and soon the Communist which were taking them as a minor problem soon was forced to hit them with many of the new Chinese recruits and they often had to use precious fuel on these "[A]narchists who know little more then how to farm and die.".
The UCR was able to re-establish contact with Japan and the two decided not to act on old disputes and they agreed not to go to war with each other and to avoid conflict the two nations signed the Treaty of Kyoto which officially defined their borders.
Persia & Afghanistan
Persia is one of the most ancient of all the lands in the world second only to Egypt, Mesopotamia and India. Nations have battle over the land with everything from rocks and stones to bombs and nukes.
Much of the Middle East was left undisturbed by the nuclear missiles except for the land which held oil which was heavily destroyed and was still toxic to 2007 when the first expedition into the oil fields was able to successfully returned.
Soon though the areas of Persia that weren't devastated quickly recovered and returned to their ancient ways. Soon Persia had re-established itself as a nation and invaded east into Afghanistan and OTL Pakistan. Their armies were devastated by the powerful warlords of Afghanistan but in the south many Muslims met them as a liberator and they were able to quickly take any resistors with the Pakistani troops aiding them.
Even though they now surrounded Afghanistan they were still unable to take the area as the warlords had some of the most powerful post doomsday weapons and were armed with every things from BARs to AK-52s and even some artillery rounds while the Persians had only a couple thousand AK-52s, one hundred StG-53s, two hundred Maxim machine guns and three artillery pieces. Otherwise most of the army was equipped with whatever they could get their hands on and after August all attacks on Afghanistan stopped.
Mesopotamia & Palestine
Mesopotamia is the first place man had civilization and it was also the most enduring. Even after all that man could throw at the ancient land it stood as a rock in a sea of great flame as a place of refuge and peace.
- HRH the King of Iraq Muhammed I
Mesopotamia & Palestine are both much King Muhammed I said a "rock in a sea of great flame". The Fascist destroyed huge amounts of oil wells with huge amounts of nuclear weapons and yet the area did not fall to complete anarchy like most of the world did. It quickly re-established itself, assessed the situation and acted upon what it could do. The people of Iraq were the first to re-establish themselves. The great and glorious city of Baghdad was devastated by nuclear missiles and the ancient city was lost forever to nuclear flame.
The people chose a king from among them by a popular vote and Muhammed was chosen. He immediately set to work getting agriculture started once more along the Tigris and the Euphrates. King Muhammed I established Mosul as the new capital of Iraq as it was the oldest city that was not devastated by nuclear flame. He soon was establishing small government funded farms that employed any unemployed by the war. He was soon hailed as a hero when the neighboring Kuwait was invaded by the Iraqi Army and incorporated into Iraq.
Israel also shared Iraq's great tenacity and quickly asserted the nation wasn't destroyed and quickly established order in Jerusalem, which was spared much like St. Louis by a malfunction. The Palestinians said that Jerusalem was under their Trans-Jordan and the Gaza Strip. The Israeli Army was much better equipped and trained and the Palestinians were quickly forced out. Within two months all of the former British Mandate of the Palestine was under Israeli control.
Israel then offered the Palestinians a pardon so long as they agreed to Israeli rule but many refused and were forced in the Arabian peninsula. The Israelis quickly established many farms along the Jordan and soon production of food was actually running slightly higher then in prewar levels due to the amount of people farming the land around the great Jordan river.
Will Egypt never die?!
- Adolf Hitler II upon receiving news that Egypt still remained as an independent and free nation
Egypt was hit by nuclear warheads by both sides destroying many cities although the Pyramids were relatively unharmed many major population were utterly devastated but much like the Middle East, Egypt simply refused to die. After all that had been thrown at it from antiquity to now the Egyptians have always gotten up and reformed themselves. The Egyptians quickly re-established themselves along the Nile River. But without technology it seemed more like 2,000 BC then the 20th Century AD.
Rest of the World
Ruler? There is no ruler in this land only chaos and anarchy.
- Rielly O'Donald
The rest of the world descended into utter chaos and often any surviving remnants of civilization were destroyed by the lack of food and poor agriculture caused by the nuclear flame. Soon the rest of the world returned to as it was in the time of Babylon. The only major differences were that many of the pre-doomsday religions existed and sometimes a remnant from the "Time before the sky turned to flame" would intrude but often only rarely.
- Hitler adopts a young 22 year old man his successor. He re-names himself Adolf Hitler II. Hoffnung continues to steadily expand outwards while absorbing tiny villages and constantly looking for better farmland.
- Minsk begins to expand outwards as the radiation begins to dissipate making agriculture easier and soon they are sending out scouts to the Baltic and to the Urals.
- Rennes expands to incorporate a portion of the coast and begins fishing operations. The Survivants finally begin agriculture in the region but it is very limited.
- The Moscow area is entirely abandoned and no human life could be found within 100 miles.
- In the British Isle many tiny groups begin to vie for control of the isle but none are serious contenders.
- Israeli Army units set up defenses on the Iraqi-Israeli border much to the protest of Iraq which says it will hinder any further diplomacy between the two nations. Israel seems not to care how it will affect diplomacy.
- King Muhammed I continues funding farming projects on the Euphrates and Tigris Rivers. He also creates the Royal Iraqi Guard to protect the King. They're some of the best fighters in all of Iraq. Iraqi scouts enter Kuwait and find that there is next to no human life in the nation.
- Palestinians in the Sinai create the Islamic Kingdom of the Palestine, the new nation declares war on Israel starting the Second Israeli-Palestine War.
The Second Israeli-Palestine War
The Second Israeli-Palestine War was ended quickly by the Israeli Army. As soon as the first Palestinian troops crossed the border they quickly swept in and swept aside the under equipped and under trained Palestinians. The Israeli Army then quickly entered the Palestinian lands and drove them into the sea the Palestinians then either set sail for Europe or died in the fighting by August the last Palestinians were out of the Middle East.
