1939

September

On 1 September, Germany invades Poland. United Kingdom and France declare war on Germany but take no military actions. Wehrmacht encircles Greater Poland. Simultaneously, two tank corps rush toward Warsaw. The battle for Warsaw begins on 9 September. Lodz and Danzig fall. Warsaw is captured on 16 September. On 19 September Germans capture Kracow. Poland surrenders. Last Polish unit is defeated on 25 September. 

November

Allies begin bombing Germany. First bombs fall on Dusseldorf, Dortmund and Frankfurt am Main. Allied casualties are high and bombing raids end. Germany begins to bomb Maginot defences, Reims, Verdun and Paris.

October

Air battles continue. The Royal Navy engages naval bombers and German submarines and sinks several of them. 

November

Phoney war continues. Germany re-organises troops on its western border.

December

On 5 December, Soviet Union declares war on Finland. Finnish troops advance significantly, going as far as outskirts of Leningrad and taking parts of Karelo-Finnish SSR. Soviet troops counterattack and push Finns back to Mannerheim line. 

1940

January

Soviet troops break through Mannerheim line and take Vyborg. With Helsinki threatened, Finland sues for peace and cedes Karelia, Sulla and port of Hanko to USSR.

February

German submarine warfare expands. Number of British trade vessels are sunk.

March

Invasion of Denmark is planned.

April

On 9 April Germany invades Denmark. Danish troops are quickly defeated and Copenhagen falls on 20 April. British troops occupy Faroe Islands and Iceland.

May

On June 12 German troops begin invasion of Benelux. German tank corps attacks Netherlands, rushing to Amsterdam. Simultaneously, German troops attack Belgium and Luxemburg in attempt to encircle the Maginot line. Luxemburg, Belgium and Netherlands capitulate respectively on 16, 17 and 20 May. German army launches and attack towards Paris

June

Maginot line is encircled and bombed and its defenders surrender. German tanks attack Paris and infantry attacks the Channel coast. Italians join the war on the German side. Paris falls and France surrenders on 18 June. French fleet is sunk by the British. France is partitioned between German and Italian occupation zone and puppet Vichy France. Baltics states become Soviet Socialist Republics and join the USSR. Romania is forced to return Bessarabia and Bukovina to USSR.

July

British naval bases, airports and cities are bombed by Germans in so called Battle of Britain. Germany lacks the capability to invade UK, though.

August

Italy demands Greece to become a puppet state. Greek government refuses. Italians declare war and attack Greece. They are unable to break through Greek resistance. Italians launch an invasion of British-allied Egypt. Italian Addis Ababa surrenders to British troops. Germany forces Romania to give Northern Transylvania to Hungary and Southern Dobruja to Bulgaria.

September

Italian troops break through Greek defensive lines but their offensive is stopped. Italian troops near Cairo and Alexandria in Egypt. British troops in Egypt are defeated in El-Alamein. Bulgaria joins the Axis and invades Greece. Greek forces are defeated and Athens fall. Greek army still hols Crete and Peloponnese. 

October

German paratroopers take Crete. On 18 October Greece surrenders. Italian troops reach the Suez canal but lack the supplies to attack Levant. Italian marines attack and conquer Cyprus.

December 

General Franco wins the Spanish Civil war and join Axis. German and Spanish troops invade Gibraltar. Having lost naval superiority over Mediterranean, The Royal Navy leaves Malta. Malta is annexed into Italy. Italian troops cross the Suez Canal into Levant.

1941

January

Italians stage an amphibious invasion of Liban, but are defeated and forced to retreat. Italians establish defensive lines along Suez canal. 

February

British troops from British Somaliland and Sudan attack Italian held Suez. Threatened to get cut off, they retreat to Alexandria. Germans dispatch Rommel with Afrika Korps to assist the Italians.

March

Axis forces win the battle of Cairo and reclaim control over most of Egypt. Yugoslavia joins the Axis, but pro-German monarch is removed several days later via a coup.

April

In response to Yugoslavia leaving the Axis, it is invaded by Bulgaria, Germany, Italy and Hungary on 3 April. Yugoslavia surrenders on 10 April. Puppet Croat state, NDH is set up.

May

On 15 May, Axis powers declare war on USSR. Unprepared, it suffers heavy losses. Two Soviet Armies are encircled in Western Ukraine. Massive tank operation surrounds Soviet troops in Besserabia. Soviet navy attempts evacuation but is sunk by Italian Royal Navy. Ukraine is virtually unprotected.

June 

German-Hungarian-Romanian joint operation advances at huge speed through Ukraine. Kiev and Kursk fall. German troops in Finland and Finnish army threaten Leningrad.

July

Massive pocket is created in Belarus. Minsk falls to German troops. Smaller encirclement takes place in Latvia. 

August

Axis troops took Ukraine, Belarus, Baltic states and Smolensk and have surrounded Leningrad. Tank operation Operation Grosses Haus is launched with aim to take Moscow.

September

Leningrad falls in German hands. Soviet army puts up tough defense of Moscow. Sevastopol is under siege and Moscow is under threat of flanking by soldiers from Ukraine. 

October

After two months of heavy fighting, Soviet staff is forced to surrender Moscow to avoid total encirclement. After loss of two largest cities and majority of population, Soviet morale is broken, but Germany is in dire situation. German fuel supply is very low, supply lines are stretched and German forces are not prepared for winter.

November

Soviets prepare counter offensive but fail to take Moscow, however they pushed German forces from Donets.

December

Limited German operation in Ukraine. Japan launches an attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December and incapacitates American navy. Japanese marines occupy number of allied colonies in Asia, e.g. Philippines.

1942

January

Japan invades and conquers Dutch East Indies and Malaya. Thailand joins the Axis. Sevastopol falls to Germans.

February

Japanese soldiers take Singapore and threaten Indian Raj. Japanese troop invade New Guinea.

March

Japanese troops take over Burma and New Guinea.

April

Italians try to invade Sinai peninsula but there troops are defeated and forced to retreat.

May

Germany begins new offensive against Soviet Union, codenamed 'Case Blue' (Fall Blau). The aim of the operation is to reach Caucasus, especially the valuable oil fields of Baku and river Volga to protect northern flank.

June

After the roads in Russia became transient, Germans cross Donets river and move to Don.

July

Soviet defences near Rostov are broken and German soldiers march toward Caucasus.

August

German troops attack Stalingrad. Soviet troops put up heavy defences, but are forced to retreat across the Volga.

September

German troops continue southwards along Volga. German troops attempt to attack Caucasus mountains but are repelled.

October

Germany begins attack of Astrakhan, but it is defended by a large Soviet force. Despite heavy losses, American navy holds Guadalcanal, preventing further Japanese expansion.

November

Soviet Union attacked Stalingrad with attempt to stop German invasion of Caucasus. Germany was forced to give up Stalingrad and quit attempts to cross the Caucasus but they were only pushed back 20 km.

December

Soviet offensive stalled. Case Blue is ended prematurely because of bad weather.

1943

January

Japanese troops evacuate Guadalcanal.

February

German troops attempt to reclaim Stalingrad but are beaten back.

March

Germany attacks Astrachan and Stalingrad. After heavy fighting, Soviet troops retreat behind Volga. Caucasus region is cut off from the rest of Soviet Union, but it supplied via Caspian sea.

April

German and Romanian mountain infantry crossed Stalingrad and reach outskirts of Georgia.

May

Germany launched an offensive named Unternehmen Zitadelle in southern and central Russia. Initially fast advance was quickly stalled by Soviet defences.

June

German-Finnish armies take Murmansk and most of Karelia and Kola. Soviet troops in Caucasus are not able to contain separatism and Caucasus falls in anarchy.

July

Demoralised Caucasus armies are broken. Axis forces cross Caucasus. Soviet Union is desperately trying to hold Baku. 

August

Germany captures major industrial centre in Saratow region. Baku is under siege.

September

German advance continues. German troops attempt to establish front along Volga river.

October

Baku falls in German hands. Soviet soldiers and citizens are demoralised and out of supplies. Soviet defences break down.

November

German troops reach Kazan and enter Kazakhstan.

December

A coup in USSR is launched Beria and his supporters. Stalin is killed. On 2 December Soviet Union sues for peace. It forced to give up its territory west of line between Astakhan and Arkhangelsk. Finland receives Karelia, Kola and part of Arkhangels region and Romania receives Transnistria. Rest of territory becomes German protectorates.
